Why we started WAKYTONG

Why we started WAKYTONG

We believe sport is not just about performance. It’s about freedom, shared experiences, and the people you meet along the way. That’s what WAKYTONG stands for: getting out there, having fun with friends, enjoying sport, pushing yourself, and always keeping a little of that wacky spirit.

At the same time, we believe sport and purpose can go hand in hand. In a fast-paced world, it matters to pause, reflect, and support the people and organizations working every day to make a real difference. That’s why WAKYTONG donates 100% of its profits to selected social and environmental projects we truly believe in and have seen in action firsthand.

100% of profits go to charity.

Purpose is not a side note at WAKYTONG. It is part of the foundation of the brand.

Little Rose Centre

South Africa

The Little Rose Centre is located in Kliptown, one of the poorest areas of Soweto/Johannesburg, with approximately 35,000 inhabitants. The community faces high unemployment (around 70%), crime, and HIV/AIDS, leaving many children to be raised by relatives or in child-headed households. In 1993, Nomayeza Majola started a playgroup for children aged 1 to 6 to promote early childhood development.

In 1997, the Little Rose Centre was officially founded as the first crèche in Kliptown and registered as a non-profit organization. Initially, an old double-decker bus provided by the City of Johannesburg served as a shelter, but in 2004, Woolworths donated containers to support the growing number of children.

Today, the Centre accommodates around 140 children: 100 in the crèche, 20 living there permanently, and others coming for meals, homework assistance, and leisure activities.

Additionally, 150 adults benefit from small job opportunities, food programs, and workshops. Run entirely by 12 dedicated volunteers from the Kliptown community, the Centre welcomes people of all races, cultures, and religions. It relies almost entirely on donations, except for four small stipends funded by the City of Johannesburg for cleaning and gardening.
